Courses

Music History And Literature

A class for sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in learning about music history. Be aware that this is ART music, not POPULAR music. This class will be offered every other year in alternation with Music Theory.

Music Theory

A class for sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in learning about music theory. It is recommended that the student have one year experience in a music ensemble before taking this class. This class will be offered every other year in alternation with Music History.

Exploring Music

A “0” level course for students interested in learning about ALL kinds of music: folk, religious, jazz, American popular, world, ethnic, and art musics.

Course-flow For Instrumental Music Classes

Students should be enrolled every year in the BASIC MUSIC COURSE. This would be Band, Orchestra, or Percussion Ensemble. If students have room in their schedule, they can sign up for additional music courses. The general flow of courses for instrumental music students is shown by year below.

Freshman Year

Students should take Band I, Orchestra, or Percussion Ensemble this year. Do not worry about other music courses this year.

Sophomore Year

Students should be signed up for Band I or Band II, depending on the teacher’s recommendation, or Orchestra or Percussion Ensemble. Do not worry about signing up for any other music courses this year.

Students who are in the Arts academy or who are planning on music as a career can consider the following classes IN ADDITION TO THEIR BASIC MUSIC COURSE for their sophomore year:

  • Exploring Music
  • Jazz Ensemble

Junior Year

Students should be signed up for Band I or Band II, depending on the teacher’s recommendation, or Orchestra or Percussion Ensemble.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC MUSIC COURSE, students can also consider the following courses:

  • Exploring Music
  • Jazz Ensemble
  • Music Theory
  • Music History and Literature
  • Independent Study (permission needed)

Senior Year

Students should be signed up for Band I or Band II, depending on the teacher’s recommendation, or Orchestra or Percussion Ensemble.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC MUSIC COURSE, students can also consider the following courses:

  • Exploring Music, Jazz Ensemble
  • Music Theory
  • Music History and Literature
  • Percussion Ensemble (permission needed)
  • Band I (permission needed)
  • Orchestra (permission needed)
  • Independent Study (permission needed)
